June 2023
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do at Retail Group.
I am Meya Kenneth and I have recently been appointed as a Training Manager under Retail Group’s vibrant Training Academy.
2. Can you tell us about your career trajectory with Retail Group?
I started working as a Cashier at Debonairs Pizza Riverwalk in 2002. I later became an Assistant Branch Manager by promotion in 2012 at Debonairs Pizza Sebele. In 2014 I was further promoted to the position of Branch Manager for Debonairs Pizza Railpark. The last role I was in before my recent shift was Acting Area Manager under the Operations department from June 2022 up until my transition to a Training Manager in February 2023
3. What qualities have enabled you to rise up the ranks within the Company?
I am a hardworking person, who is very passionate. I am an open person and I do not believe in misleading other people. I do my work diligently and I am gifted in leading other people or teams. I do not like failure, and I love producing results. If I fall short of what is expected of me or what I expect of myself it pains me, so I give my very best to give positive results.
4. A little birdie tells us you’ve also recently graduated. Tell us about that.
Yes, I have recently graduated with a Certificate in Business Management. It was a year’s course that I started last year in January 2022. I loved that it has elevated my skills and opened my eyes to appreciating the importance of education, to keep on learning. I am so happy and excited about having graduated. The challenge was working and having to show up for work simultaneously. Sometimes I’d be late for classes delayed by work commitments. From that, I learned to plan and schedule my days accordingly. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Retail Group to have noticed my capabilities and giving me the prospect to further my studies.
5. What motivates you?
I am motivated by interacting with customers and success motivates me to do my job well. I feel that aligning the company’s vision and values with my own is one way to achieve that. My leaders from all departments motivate me for example always encouraging me to not give up, even when it came to school.
6. Who is Meya outside of being a Training Manager?
I like socializing with people for example attending events and showers to support them, going to church, and most importantly spending time with my family, for example celebrating birthdays.
7. What advice would you give to young people out there who are looking at joining the hospitality industry and are unsure whether there is longevity and career growth in the industry?
My advice to young people out there who want to join hospitality is that there are a lot of good opportunities. I am a living example. The key is to be patient and work hard. The Retail Group company itself equips the youth with knowledge and skill requirements and is an upright decent place to start a career.
